South America As A Gay Travel Destination
April 30, 2010 by: Howie HolbenFor many years Brazil was the only gay destination in South America. However all that is changing with more liberal laws and a growing LGBT movement there are now a number of destinations which are gay friendly. These days it is easy to find gay travel to South America of all kinds. It is a continent with great variety and incredible natural beauty and you can explore it all.
Even in Brazil things are changing and gay people no longer need to restrict themselves to Rio and Sao Paulo. The two biggest cities in the country have tons to offer, especially if you want to party. However now a gay vacation in Brazil can be more varied with a trip up the coast. The area between Salvador and Fortaleza now has many gay destinations for those who want to experience some incredible beaches, colonial towns and unique cultures.
The most European city on the continent is Buenos Aires. At the moment it does not have a specific gay area but do not worry. There are plenty of gay hotels in the Palermo area and many gay bars and clubs throughout the central neighborhoods. Palermo is a chic area full of expensive shops and restaurants and one of the most important tourist sites in the city, the Recoletta Cemetery. It is central and has good transport links so is a great place to base yourself. San Telmo, home of the tango is also popular with gay travelers and several places now offer gay tango lessons. Same sex civil unions are now legal in the city which confirms that things have changed a lot in the last few years.
Colombians are famous throughout the continent for their hospitality and ability to have a good time. The country is largely safe for travelers these days and people are starting to discover the many joys to be found there. In terms of gay travel things are also looking promising. In recent years there have been a number of new laws which give gay couples the same rights as straight couples. Bogota has a fabulous gay neighborhood called Chapinero Alto with loads of bars, cafes and gay hotels. The city hosts a gay pride event every June and many free cultural events throughout the summer.
Santiago is the other rising destination in South America. There are some great places to stay and some opportunities for a top night out. The country is moving towards legalization of gay marriage thanks to a vociferous LGBT movement. Outside the capital there is an amazing array of things to do in Chile. The natural beauty and changing landscapes are unique and you can travel from desert in the north, through the central valleys of vineyards through the Lake District to the fjords and ice fields in the south. The country also has some great ski resorts.
For the adventure traveler Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador have a huge array of possibilities. While they do not have as much gay friendly infrastructure as other countries they do have growing gay scenes in their capital cities. There are a number of companies who could set up a gay trip to go exploring the jungle, climbing, trekking, exploring ancient ruins and visiting historic cities.
There are now many travel agents organizing trips for gay people to South America. Some are dedicated to gay travelers but other mainstream travel agencies are realizing the opportunities and providing gay trips.
Gay tours to South America are growing in popularity. This is because there is so much to offer all over the continent.
