Contemporary Ankle Bracelets
May 31, 2010 by: Igor PauerMen and women the world over, have long adorned themselves with beautiful things. Whether it be jewelry or glamorous clothing, additions to the body are part of the human tradition. Rings, necklaces, earrings, arm and ankle bracelet, are just a few of the many types of jewelry seen today. For some the jewelry has nothing more than decorative value, for others it defines who they are as people, either culturally or according to how society views its meaning.

While men may where certain pieces, jewelry is associated with women and popular fashion. With pieces ranging from the simple and inexpensive to the intricate and one of a kind, people enhance any part of the body they choose to. One piece seeing a comeback is the anklet, which has been around since at least the Bronze Age, thousands of years ago.
Ankles are not necessarily the first spot a person thinks to adorn themselves when they begin to put on jewelry. However, the ankle is a perfect location for bracelets, as the foot provides a nice barrier to keep the jewelry in place. One might even say the ankle is like the wrist of the lower half of the body and as such deserves as much embellishment.

The Middle East and India, are areas where bracelets around the ankle are a popular form of decoration. Dating back to Sumerian and Persian times, anklets have been common finds in anthropological excavations. In Persia, the trinkets were often adorned with animals. In India, where this jewelry is most commonly identified with the culture, anklets are often part of a marriage ceremony. They are regularly given to the bride as gifts, and the tinkling sound of bells on the bracelet herald the arrival of the new bride.
Western cultures, like the US, see most decorative jewelry as purely fashion items. The argument could be made that anklets are an example of female equality and sexual liberation. Until the turn of the 20th century, women were still largely covered from neck to wrist to foot. A woman’s ankle was a private area that was forbidden to be shown, and often scandalized those around when it might be shown. Until the ankle became an acceptable body part to show this type of jewelry would not be practical. Anklets became popular in the 1950′s when girls began wearing bobby socks and used them to embellish them. Contemporary times have seen shorts get shorter and the ankle has become a popular place for jewelry to show off the lower extremities.
Like other jewelry, these bracelets come in an array of types and forms. Ranging from strings, straps, and chains to intricate pieces with precious stones and metals, the anklet is a piece that draws attention to the foot whether it is by itself or one of many. In India, small bells often tinkle from around the ankle, while in the US many choose to adorn theirs with charms. With the ankle, anything goes.
Anklets are like bracelets for the feet, and can be as attractive as any other piece of jewelry. Wearing an ankle bracelet often goes along with the type of personality the person may have. They are often seen as more free spirited or daring in their choice of fashion. The ankle has found its place among history as yet another area of the body to beautify and enhance with jewelry, and has made sure that the ankle will no longer go unnoticed.
