Exercise Can Worsen Depression

Ironically, too much exercise can actually damage you mentally. Anything taking to an extreme is bad for you, and exercise is no exception here.

Unfortunately, depression doesn’t just stay in your head, it actually causes changes to your body that can lead to delayed recovery and increased weight gain.

So here is how to tell if exercise is making you depressed:

1. Things no longer excite you: Perhaps one of the most revealing signs of depression, when you no longer get excited by things that used to excite you, depression is probably budding. This happens because depression puts on negative blinders within your mind.

2. A change in appetite: Extreme changes in appetite can go either way. You could either lose weight or gain weight at irregular rates. So if you notice odd eating patterns and/or odd weight changes, depression could be causing this.

3. Rapid changes in your sleeping schedule: Most depressed people experience a decrease in how much they sleep while increasing how much time they spend in bed. This happens because although they are sleeping less, they stay in bed to ruminate.

4. Problems concentrating: Unfortunately, depression can cause changes to the hippocampus, the area of the brain responsible for memory. So if you are seriously depressed, mental processing speeds could plummet to the point where making decisions is extremely difficult.

5. Thoughts of permanent release: If at any time you have thoughts of suicide, make sure to contact a health professional immediately. The problem here is that when someone is severely depressed and sees no light at the end of the tunnel, they think suicide is the only release.

Although exercise is one of the best ways to decrease depression, it can also exacerbate it if done too heavily. So make sure you really watch your mind and body when taking exercise to new levels.
