Breaking In New Shoes
June 30, 2010 by: Justina GrayDr Martens are not easy to break in, people with sensitive feet find that they get blisters or sore feet. The problem is that the leather Dr Martens uses is thicker than the average shoe leather, because it is of such a high quality.
There are lots of urban legends about the best way to break in a pair of Dr Martens boots. Some of those legends are funny, some could be described as insanitary, most are just a bit bizarre. This article looks at the 2 least odd ways, that work.
First smoother your feet in Vaseline followed by several pairs of socks or a single thick pair. Put on your Dr Martens and go and stand in the shower. Leave your new Dr Martens on until they are dry again or for at least 6 hours.
If you think getting into a shower with your DMs on is a bit extreme, get them damp by wrapping them in wet towels. Leave them for at least 30 minutes then put them on. Whatever method you settle on, it is important to keep your boots on for as long as possible. Some people believe that you have to leave them on for 48hrs straight, even in bed! Break your DMs in on a day(s) when you do not have to be on your feet a lot or walk far or your feet will get sore or blistered.
The last method is a bit time consuming, but is a less strange. Each new pair of boots comes with a tub of Wonder Balm. Rub as much of this as possible into the boots, in particular on the seams and the heel. Wrap the boots in a thick towel and hit them repeatedly with a rubber hammer. Rub in more balm and repeat. Take the boots out of the towel and flex them with your hands, twisting them in to and fro. Wear them the for a few hours, then the following day for an hour more. Wear them slightly longer each day, until they are comfortable.
