Ways To Choose A Good Wheelchair

July 29, 2010 by: Ace Winget

Similar to picking out a new couch for your living room, picking out a wheelchair takes some thought. There are many features that can really stand out when purchasing one. Here are a few things that stand out when narrowing down the right type of chair for you.

When deciding what type of wheelchair to get you need to think of the model type and style you like best. Electric options are nice for people who do not have good upper body strength or who are quadriplegic. Electric models are also fitted with a lot of fun accessories, such as added neck support and headrests.

A manual chair is another good option. Manual chairs need to be wheeled in order to move. It can either be wheeled by a caregiver or the person in the chair.

Your budget plays an important role in the type of wheelchair you can get. Electric models cost more than manual chairs do. In cases where you simply can’t afford an expensive model, manual chairs might be the only option for you.

Another consideration is how comfortable you are in the chair. Different models are going to be comfortable to different people. Check it out and make sure the armrests, etc. are at the right place for you.

Check out how easy the chair is to transport. Some chairs are easily folded and can be stored in a variety of different places. Other models don’t fold and can be difficult to transport unless they are used in a van or specialized vehicle.

Another question to ask yourself is where the wheelchair will primarily be used. If you will be spending a lot of time indoors, the manual is always a good option. Electric chairs differ, depending on how well it moves over rough terrain, etc. Typically it handles the outdoors superbly.

Finding the perfect wheelchair for you during the summer is important. Your doctor should be able to give you some good recommendations of places to search. They can also give you more advice for the type of chair to use.
