Road Transport: France And Germany Consider The Future Of Society.

August 15, 2010 by: Paolo Matzi

Road transport has a long history in France and Germany. But with climate change and peak oil, becoming real issues, transport planners are now planning for the change to sustainable road use. Bicycle usage is on the increase, as people are changing the way they travel.

Since the late nineteenth century, both France and Germany have been involved in road transport. To enable their road transport to develop, both countries built large, high quality road networks. This allowed French and German drivers, to driver further and faster, and encouraged car use to expand throughout both countries.

In the sixties, when the environmental movement started, environmentalists were considered as radicals and trouble-makers. Now, environmental issues are a daily concern. Governments are starting to legislate in favor of the environment, and to spend vast amounts of money to alleviate the environmental concerns of our time. As much as governments legislate for the environment, change will only occur when the general public decides to act.

As the demand for oil continues to rise, it has become apparent that oil reserves have peaked, and are now declining. In order to meet the demand, oil exploration companies are participating in more risky ventures to provide the world with oil. These ventures, when they have gone wrong, are extremely difficult to repair, and can cause irreparable damage. As oil consumers switch to alternative sources of fuel and transport, the demand for oil will reduce.

With green issues becoming more popular, some German and French cities are now encouraging bicycle use. Transport planners are now considering the bicycle when planning. Bicycle lanes are being built within city centers, to provide a safe and environmental alternative. To facilitate the use of bicycles for daily activities, extensive bicycle parking facilities are also being fitted. There are also low cost hire bike schemes running within cities, for short commutes across the city.

As the future beckons, consumers are being forced to reconsider their daily lives and the choices that are made. If people continue as they have been going, society will be faced with continued climate change and higher prices for all the goods which it needs.

By switching to environmental alternatives now, modern society has the possibility of reducing the effects of climate change. Where road transport in France and Germany meant cars, trucks and buses. It now also includes bicycles, at least in city centers.
