A Healthy Diet Is Crucial To Stress Management

Our lives run on a high-tension wire. We have projects to finish, deadlines to meet, money problems, kids problems and so much more. And as we go along stress becomes our partner. Thus begins the hunt to reduce stress. The answer surprisingly lies in your diet. Food is not only necessary for survival, but it can also serve as a way to manage stress.

Let’s take the primary issue with stress- reduced levels of energy. To combat fatigue, magnesium-rich spinach is a tasty solution. Almonds, with vitamin B and E, also increase energy and boost your immunity. Oranges rich in Vitamin C also help minimize stress while strengthening the immune system.

Another must-have vegetable, high in vitamin and potassium content, is sweet potato. This starchy vegetable has bulk to keep your tummy full for hours, thus eliminating the need for unhealthy filler treats.

Sweet potatoes can be particularly stress reducing because they can satisfy the urge we get for carbohydrates and sweets when we are under a great deal of stress. Instead of reaching for a donut, eat one of these instead.

A similar acting ‘fruit’ is apricot. Dried apricots, with muscle relaxant magnesium, can appease a sweet tooth with additional health benefits.

The soft, tasty thanksgiving turkey that we celebrate with every year, is actually another relaxant due to the Tryptophan present in it. This has a natural sedative effect.

Tryptophan serves as a precursor for serotonin, which helps the body regulate appetite, sleep patterns, and mood. Eating turkey when you’re stressed relaxes your body involuntarily.. Thus the popular Thanksgiving myth that consumption of turkey leads to enhanced sleepiness, is actually not really a myth!

Fish too play their part in deflating a high stress situation. Salmon and white fish literally calm the brain with omega-3 fatty acids. These acids prevent stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline from being produced in large amounts at a time, thus allowing the consumer to be calm and collected in a scenario where he would normally panic!

Avocados, walnuts and brown rice also reduce stress and give you that needed boost of energy. The next time you find your anxiety spiraling out of control, remember that food should be your ally, not your enemy. When you control the food you eat everything else will automatically fall in place.
