Here’s A Quick Instruction Of How To Go About Install Your Own Underfloor Heating System
September 6, 2010 by: Mary Barbara DickinsUnderfloor heating has been around since the time of the Romans who happen to be the ones who came up with the concept first and used this type of heating throughout their homes. Although today the heat is supplied via electricity, the idea is more or less the same. When you decide to do this for your floors you will discover there are a variety of different styles so make sure that the one you choose is a more simplified version or you will end up having to pay someone to do it for you.
Before you even go out and buy your system you will need to first decide where you want it to go, measure the area you have chosen and them make sure that your tiling is removed. After that you can go out and buy the system a long with grout mix, some thinset mortar mix and a variety of other things you may or may not have on hand such as masking tape, plastic wire cover molding, trowel, mortar paddle, dust mask, bucket, safety glasses, a marking pin and some scissors.
The very first thing you need to do is decide where you want the thermostat to be placed. This should be somewhere convenient, generally near a light switch and should be about five feet above the top of the floor on the wall.
After that is done you will need to take the mats and lay them out where you will want them to be and take your pen and mark any spots on the floor where cuts will need to be made for the mats to fit properly. When this is done lay down your power cable and put it as close to your thermostat as you can get it.
After you have the marks made and the layout is perfect you can make the proper cuts in the mats making sure that you do not cut any of the wiring when you are cutting away some of the mesh from the mats. Now take the double sided tape that comes with your installation kit and securely attach the mats to the subfloor. It is important that you tape all of the loose wires too.
If your kit happens to come with a temperature sensor then this is when you would take it and lay it under one of the mats and make sure it is securely taped. The wires for the sensor need to be bundled along with your heating wires.
Now you will measure the wire cover molding and cut them so that they can reach the area in which you put the thermostat. Now bundle all of the heating wires and floor sensor wire and put them inside of the molding. Next you will snap the cover for the molding closed. Take off the seal of the double sided tape on the molding and press onto the wall. If you have done this correctly the bundle of heating wire should be coming out the top of the cover molding.
You can attach all of the wires to the thermostat by following the included instructions. Once you have done this correctly you will be ready to mix the thinset mortar. Take your bucket and only put one quarter water in it and slowly add the mortar mixing well. The mixture should not be runny.
Take the flat part of your trowel and spread the mixture evenly over all of your heating mats and the wires. Do this carefully because you do not want to break any of the wires or damage the mats. Once this has been completed you will take your floor tiles and begin placing them over your mortared mats.
It is important that you let the mortar dry for at least a 24 hour time span after which you can move on to the next couple of steps. When you are sure that the mortar is dry you should go a head and follow the instructions you will find with the tile grout.
You should use a rubber float for your grout when you apply it in gaps and do this at a 45 degree angle. Make sure you apply evenly between all of the tiles. After all the grout is in place you can take a wet sponge to wipe extra grout away that may be on the tiles.
After your grout has dried it is safe to go a head and clean your flooring as you usually do. You are now ready to call your local electrician to come over and attach your new heating system to your breaker box with a new breaker.
