Some Tips To Keep Your Back Healthy

Back or spine is an integral part of our body; in fact I should rather say that it is the MOST important part of the human body. It supports our entire body and most nerves from the brain to the organs and tissues of the body go through the spine. The spine is involved in almost everything that we do! Even though it is of so much importance to us and our body, most people do not take good care of the back, or take precautions to keep it healthy.

What can be done to prevent back pain? Back pain is preventable. There are two important things to keep in mind though – correct posture and regular exercise. While exercising, only do those exercises which do not put strain on the back or jerk the back. Instead of exercising, yoga can be done as well. Correct body posture is another important factor and helps in preventing back pain. Whether you are standing, sitting, lying down or doing any other activity, it is important that the right posture is maintained.

Useful tips for a Healthier Back

Exercise is the key to a healthy body. There are many forms of exercise like gym workout, aerobics, swimming, walk, running, yoga etc. It depends upon individual preference when deciding which form of exercise they choose to do. The important thing is that the body should be exercised, as many ailments like pain in the back can be controlled and prevented if we exercise regularly. Following are some useful tips for a healthy back:

1. Begin by doing low impact exercises which are suitable for your age and designed to strengthen the back muscles.

2. Always stretch before starting the exercise and cool down after the exercise routine is over.

3. While sitting, keep your back straight.

4. While standing, rest your body weight on both your feet evenly and stand straight.

5. While working at home or office, make sure that your chair and table are at a comfortable height. The chair should neither be too high or too low in comparison to the table.

6. Always wear comfortable and low heel footwear.

7. Sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees is the best way to sleep. Sleep on a firm bed.

8. Not many people know this, but smoking is not good for your back. It reduces the blood flow to the lower spine and causes the spinal disc to deteriorate. So, quit smoking!

9. To pick up heavy objects, do not bend forward. Always bend your knees towards your stomach to pick up objects from the ground.

10. Reducing weight around the waist and stomach are good for the back, as extra weight causes strain on the lower back muscles. Make sure your body weight is proportionate to your height.

11. Eat a balanced diet. Your daily diet must provide you sufficient calcium, phosphorous and vitamin D.
