Childhood obesity is starting to become a major problem in America according to experts. In fact, in the United States alone almost twenty percent of children from two to eighteen years old are overweight. Fortunately, there are things you can do in your own home to prevent this epidemic-like condition from happening to your children.
Basically, you can start by educating your children on the importance of developing healthy eating habits. They can learn these things from school but if you don’t show your kids how to apply them in their daily lives it would be useless. Let your kids watch while you’re cooking and when they become a little bit bigger, you can teach them how to cook as well.
When buying groceries for the family, take the kids along with you and show them that buying food can really be fun. Help them get familiar with healthy foods like fish, meat, egg, fruits and vegetables by letting them do the picking. A list of things to buy will be handy so make sure you have prepared one before going to the market.
Dinner time is the best time for the whole family to gather together and bond. Make sure everybody’s on the table as soon as the dinner bell rings. It’s fun when everybody gets to share his or her experience in work or school so make your children understand that dinner time is one of the things they should look forward to when they get home.
Encourage your kids to lead active lifestyles. Make exercise a part of your everyday routine. When you wake up in the morning, gather the kids and perform some fun exercises as a family. In the afternoon, spend time together by playing games that will get them going like baseball, football or plain hide and seek.
It will be easier for your children to live healthy lifestyles if they have someone to guide them. Now that is your part as a parent so be a good example for them and live a healthy lifestyle yourself. It will also be easier if you support and encourage one another all the time.
